Earthtoned Grasshopper

Calephorus

a grasshopper, Acrididae, Kenya, photo © by Michael Plagens

This grasshopper was observed on a rocky slope with thin soil and heavily grazed by cattle and goats west of Eldoret, Kenya. April 2013.

Grasshoppers are often abundant in habitats where grasses do not represent a high proportion of the flora. Instead they often are numerous where grasses have been grazed almost to oblivion. The habitat where this hopper was found was over-grazed and had a high proportion of broad-leaved plants that are distasteful to ruminant browsers and yet favor a number of insects, including grasshoppers.
