This grasshopper pair was observed in a small garden at Eldoret, Kenya. April 2013. The smaller male is on top. Identification was suggested by Jacques Mestre.

The Desert Locust is species Schistocerca gregaria, similar to this one, but with even longer wings. The grasshoppers shown here are also capable of flights in the range of tens of kilometers. Despite the name "grass"-hopper these insects feed on a wide variety of plants and find the sweet cultivated varieties very agreeable.
