an Arctiidae, possibly Amata passalis, from Kerio Valley, Kenya, Africa. December 2014. Photo © by Michael Plagens

Observed at lights in Kerio Valley, Kenya, Africa. Dec. 2014.

The bright red abdomen, when quickly and suddenly exposed might startle a predator just a spit second long enough for the moth to make an escape.
