Black Vine Weevil

Observed at lights, Taita Hills, Kenya, May 2017. Size about 15 mm long. Identification of this pest species was provided by Chris Kolenberg of Kenya Biologics.

This large weevil has numerous rows of minute pits (punctate) on the elytra as well as the pronotum. Otherwise the color is uniform shiny black. It is native to Europe and is a pest of many cultivated plants. The larval stage, a cream-colored grub, feeds upon the root systems reducing vigor and sometimes death of the plants.
