Cream-striped Owl

Observed at Mombasa, Kenya, January 2012. The wing span is about 10 cm. This photo also appears on Flickr where MikeReunion provided the correct identification.

This striking moth was found alighted on a wall just below an electric light in the early morning. A higher resolution photograph has been submitted to Flickr, Moths of Africa. A very similar specimen was photographed in neighboring Tanzania. Moths of this group are known to sometimes take flights of 100's of kilometers, showing up far from where the caterpillar matured.

In early June 2017 a number of these insects were observed flying during the day at Mt. Kenya Forest Reserve:
