Evening Bat

an evening or common bat, photo © by Michael Plagens

Found dead at a roadside in the Kerio Valley, Kenya. December 2015.

Insectivorous bats like this one are represented in Kenya by scores of species and many millions of individuals. Their role in the ecosystems of Kenya is huge, but largely underestimated by diurnal human observers. This bat was struck by a motor vehicle while it hunted at night for flying insects. It has very large, long ears.

Vespertilionidae (?) -- Vesper or Evening Bat Family
