Coral Senecio

Kleinia breviflora ?

Observed on a foot trail along the Elgeyo Escarpmet near Iten, Kenya. January 2012.

  • Disc Flowers: The disc flowers are dark pink to almost red. The long tubes are pominent as are the five pointed lobes. Staminate florets have long excerted, bright yellow stamens.
  • Ray Flowers: No ray flowers.
  • Phyllaries: The severl dozen florets are subtended by a single series of long, lance-shaped phyllaries that are smooth and waxy-looking.
  • Pappus:
  • Leaves: The leaves are elyptic to oblong with a blunt tip. Leaves are smooth and waxy.
  • Perennial: Above ground is herbaceous and about 1 meter tall. Lower stems are are waxy and succulent.

The specimen shown below is from Eldoret, Kenya. The habitat is a rocky slope with heavy cattle and goat grazing pressure. No obvious feeding on this plant by the pasture animals. Observed December 2012.
