Silver Oak, Brachylaena huillensis, Nairobi, Kenya, photo © by Michael Plagens Silver Oak isn't an oak at all, but rather a kind of sunflower. The flower heads are small and appear in panicled clusters high up on the branch ends; male and female flower heads occur on separate plants. The leaves are smooth green on the top surface and velvety white on the undersurface. The gray-brown bark is fibrous, becoming furrowed on older branches.

Asteraceae -- Sunflower Family
