Growing from a crack in a paver stone, Machakos, Kenya. 30 May 2017.

Sand mats belonging to the genus Euphorbia thrive under harsh environmental conditions. During mid day the sun beating down on the stone or rocky soil can raise surface temperatures well above 40°C. At any time the feet of animals or people can trample the leaves and stems. The minute flowers are clustered into small head-like groups.
